Through the Prescott College Education Program, students may complete all
requirements leading to the following Arizona teaching credentials and endorsements:
- Elementary Education
- Secondary Education
- Special Education (mentally handicapped, seriously
emotionally handicapped, and learning disabled)
- Bilingual Education
- English as a Second Language
Students fulfill the requirements for a teaching credential while earning
their bachelor's degree.
All Prescott College education programs are approved by the Arizona State
Department of Education. Upon successful completion of the Education Program
and the Arizona Teacher Proficiency Assessment, students are recommended
for certification. Courses emphasize current educational research and theory,
as well as practical experience in the classroom. Students are expected to
master educational principles and apply these in many problem-solving situations
in courses, through independent studies and in their student teaching assignments.
Examples of Education courses include "Foundations of Education," "Learning
theories," "Curriculum Design," "Multicultural
Education," "Environmental Education," and "Authentic
Assessment."
Students have the opportunity to apply the theory they are learning in these
foundational courses through classroom observations and volunteer opportunities.
They are encouraged to employ experiential strategies in order to assist
their students to develop the skills, knowledge, and tools for further learning.
Upon completion of the foundational courses, students enter into an immersion
program where they work in schools designing and implementing curriculum.
Students entering the Teacher Education Program generally have a background
of courses in the liberal arts. Students who do not have such a background
may be advised to take courses at Prescott College or through a local community
college before entering the program.
Requirements
For certification in elementary, secondary, English as a second
language, bilingual, or special education, students are required to
complete a bachelor's degree and meet the College's graduation
requirements. Students are also required to complete the Arizona and U.S.
Constitution

apply.
For certification, all students must also pass the Arizona Teacher
Proficiency Exam (A.T.P.E.).
