Return to AJ Home
Since 1994, Alligator Juniper's mission has been to feature emerging and established writers and
photographers in an attractive, perfect-bound literary journal. In keeping with the experiential
mission of Prescott College, advanced resident degree students decide the contents of the issue and
maintain personalized correspondence with prospective artists. In other words, the poems, short
stories, and creative essays that appear in Alligator Juniper are chosen by student editors, who are
enrolled in an editorial course. The organization's artistic goals are to continue to craft a
premiere literary forum for an expanding audience, and to feature innovative poems, essays, and short stories by individuals whose success as writers and artists is dependent upon small magazines such as AJ. Visit our gallery to see cover shots of past issues.
Our name
The Alligator Juniper is a tree in the juniper family with bark in a checkered pattern, resembling an alligator's skin. While the tree is native to New Mexico and Arizona, the alligator is native to swampland and tropics. This pairing in our name invites both the regional and the exotic. And just as ventures in the arts and letters challenge commonly-held definitions and boundaries, so our name blurs lines between the thing and its associations. Finally, because Alligator Juniper is published by Prescott College, a college for the Liberal Arts and the Environment it is fitting that the name references the natural world, thereby creating a bridge between the arts and the environment.
