Field Ecology

Fellowship available at the Prescott College Field Station in Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico.  The Center is located on the Sonoran shores of the Midriff Island region of the Gulf of California.  The mission of the Center is to contribute to conservation efforts in the Gulf by offering outstanding undergraduate courses, conducting and supporting ongoing conservation projects in cooperation with Mexican entities, and providing community outreach programs to the surrounding communities.  The purpose of the fellowship program is to establish continuity in the conservation biology and community outreach projects initiated by the Center.  The Field Ecology Fellow will assist in working on many of the Center’s ongoing conservation biology, management, and education projects.

The Field Ecology Fellow will be principally responsible for working with Center faculty to coordinate several ongoing floral and faunal projects in coastal, island and marine environments.  Examples of projects in which the fellow might become involved include: censusing and monitoring of seabird and wading bird colonies on Isla Alcatraz; photo-identification of Fin Whales in the Midriff Island Region, house mouse population ecology on Isla Alcatraz; swallow nesting project in coastal regions around Kino; Isla Alcatraz management plan development and implementation.  Limited participation in facilitating the Center’s Environmental Education Program will also be expected. Responsibilities include, some program development and research design, data collection, entry and analysis, limited supervision of Prescott College students in research work, and submission of regular written reports discussing the progress of the projects.  Some projects may include GPS and GIS work.
