PRESCOTT COLLEGE MASTER'S STUDENT AWARDED BUSH LEADERSHIP FELLOWS PROGRAM
GRANT
PRESCOTT - Pat Sanchez, a master's degree student at Prescott College, is
one of this year's recipients of the Bush Leadership Fellows Program grant.
Each year the program awards approximately 25 grants in Minnesota, North
and South Dakota and Wisconsin to "accomplished, motivated individuals
who are eager to prepare for greater leadership responsibilities within their
professions and communities."
Sanchez, a prevention specialist for Sawyer County Health and Human Services
in Wisconsin, receives a monthly stipend and instruction and travel allowances
up to $24,000 over an 18-month period.
The fellowship was awarded to Sanchez regardless of where she lives or attends
school. She chose Prescott College.
"As an experiential learner, I was looking for an educational institution
that allowed this type of learning," said Sanchez. "It is very
empowering to be able to select and design your course work and work one-on-one
with your advisor. At Prescott College, you are a person with a face, family
and a life, not just a name and a number."
Sanchez will be working with an advisor in Colorado while completing her
master's degree in Outdoor Education. She plans to work with adolescents
and women in transition, travel to Alaska or Nepal to learn mountaineering
skills and obtain her Wilderness Medic Certification, in addition to other
goals.
After earning her degree, Sanchez will return to her position in Sawyer
County to implement more adventure-based programs for adolescents. One day,
she hopes to turn a family-run fishing and hunting resort into a youth camp,
directed and operated by youth.
