PRESCOTT COLLEGE RECOMMENDED FOR 10-YEAR REACCREDITATION
A team representing the Commission on Institutions of Higher Learning of
the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) will recommend
a full and unqualified 10-year reaccredidation for Prescott College. These
recommendations come after a three-day visit that included meetings with
students, local community members and faculty and staff.
"This is the most successful outcome possible in the reaccredidation
process and one that speaks of the quality of the programs and people of
the College," said Prescott College President Neal Mangham.
The visiting team will report their recommendations to the Commission, which
will then announce a formal decision in February.
The visiting team was particularly impressed with a community meeting that
took place on Wednesday. Community members who participated included Ms.
Anna Parker, former Prescott College President Ralph Bohrsen, several alumni
and representatives from the West Yavapai Guidance Clinic, Prescott Frontier
Rotary Club, Prescott National Forest, Prescott Unified School District,
Yavapai Exceptional Industries, Skyview Charter School, the Hassayampa Inn,
and North Central University.
For the past three years, Prescott College has been engaged in a process
of self-study, addressing the Commission's requirements and criteria for
accreditation. The evaluation team visited the institution from Oct. 18 to
20 to gather evidence that the self-study was thorough and accurate.
During their visit, the NCA team recognized many of the College's strengths,
including a clear mission statement and focus; engaged and passionate students
and bright and energetic faculty.
"The NCA team was impressed with the College's student-centered, field-based,
community oriented curriculum and our connections to local institutions such
as the US Forest Service and the Skyview Charter School," said Mangham. "The
team's recommendations not only recognize Prescott College, but also local
community members and groups that collaborate with our students and faculty."
Prescott College was first accredited by the Commission in 1966 and is accredited
at the Bachelor's and Master's degree level. The Commission on Institutions
of Higher Education is one of six accrediting agencies in the United States
that provides institutional accreditation on a regional basis. The Commission
accredits approximately 950 institutions of higher education in a nineteen-state
region.
