PRESCOTT COLLEGE NAMED AS ONE OF NATION'S LEADING COLLEGES THAT ENCOURAGES CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

PRESCOTT - Prescott College has been recognized for leadership in the field of student character development in "The Templeton Guide: Colleges that Encourage Character Development," a guidebook released nationwide today.

Designed for students, parents and educators who believe that character matters, "The Templeton Guide" recognizes programs that represent the best practices in the field of character development during the college years. The guide contains profiles of 405 exemplary college programs in ten categories.

Prescott College's Wilderness Orientation program was recognized for helping students define their personal values and emphasizing service learning. The three-week backpacking expedition introduces new students to the Southwest, other students and new ways of learning.

Part seminar in small group living and wilderness travel and part an introduction to experiential education, Wilderness Orientation helps students find a balance between self-fulfillment, service to others, and sensitivity to the natural environment. The program has been in place since Prescott College's inception in 1966.

"Prescott College is very proud to have been included in this book for its Wilderness Orientation program. Character development is a lifelong process, and we feel this program serves students well beyond their college years," said Prescott College President Neal Mangham. "Ninety-nine percent of our incoming students report that they are significantly more prepared for their educational journey as a result of the program. They not only have a greater sense of responsibility for the earth, but a better understanding of themselves and how to be productive and positive members of a group."

The John Templeton Foundation's College and Character Initiative encourages colleges and universities to do as much as they can to reinforce the positive values instilled by parents, such as honesty, compassion, self-discipline, and respect.
