PC STUDENTS TO PLEDGE SOCIAL AND
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
At Prescott College's graduation on Sunday, President Dan Garvey will announce
the College's adoption of the Graduation Pledge Alliance, a voluntary pledge
students can take to indicate that they will search for socially and environmentally-friendly
jobs.
Prescott College seniors signing the pledge will join thousands of other
students at dozens of other colleges and universities throughout the U.S.,
including Harvard University, Earlham College, MIT, Notre Dame and the University
of Rochester.
The pledge states: "I pledge to explore and take into account the social
and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve
these aspects of any organizations for which I work."
"This pledge is important because it is a wonderful thing for people
to publicly proclaim their commitment to improving the world," said
Garvey.
Students determine for themselves what they consider to be socially and
environmentally responsible. For some that may be working for companies or
organizations that do not degrade the environment; practice discriminatory
or unfair business; create an unfriendly work atmosphere or promote social
injustice. Those who sign the pledge will receive a certificate with their
diplomas.
Rob Hastings, who will earn a degree in environmental studies and work on
a nesting study in the Coconino National Forest this summer, said he plans
to sign the pledge.
"Change has to start with someone doing something. It needs to start
with individuals. That's one of the greatest lessons that this school has
taught me. I believe that when I go for a job, they will not only interview
me, but I will interview them as a prospective employee. I want to know if
I would feel good about working for them," he said.
The Graduation Pledge Alliance is coordinated by Manchester College in Indiana.
