GARVEY TO RECEIVE JULIAN SMITH
AWARD
Dan Garvey, president of Prescott College, was recently selected to receive
the 2002 Julian Smith Award from the Council on Outdoor Education, which
is part of the American Alliance on Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance (AAHPERD).
The Julian Smith Award recognizes an individual who has shown significant
attainment in the area of outdoor education over an extended period of time.
This is the highest award given by the Council on Outdoor Education and therefore
the recipients represent the best in the field. Contributions to the field
of outdoor education include such things as professional writing and research,
presentations at professional meetings, and service to the field of education
beyond one's own program.
"Dr. Garvey was selected on the basis of his 25-year career as an administrator
and educator wherein he consistently focused on educational improvement and
reform," said Jim Stiehl, past-chair of the Council on Outdoor Education
and long-time member of AAHPERD. "He also has served as president and
executive director of the Association for Experiential Education, was vice-president
of the American Youth Foundation, was recipient of the 1997 Kurt Hahn award
and has authored more than 25 books and articles dealing with the broad topic
of experiential education."
As recipient of the 2002 Julian Smith award, Garvey will be acknowledged
at the National AAHPERD Convention to be held in San Diego next April. He
will deliver a featured presentation at the award ceremony.
The mission of the Council on Outdoor Education is to support professionals
who work in higher education, elementary schools, secondary schools, recreation
and park programs, and clinical settings who provide programs in, for and
about the out-of-doors; particular emphasis is placed on team building through
the use of ropes and adventure courses.
