PRESCOTT COLLEGE WELCOMES NEW
CHIEF OPERATING/FINANCIAL OFFICER
Prescott - Steven Corey is the newest member of the Prescott College Advisory
Council, one of six individuals reporting directly to the president. In his
new position as chief operating officer and chief financial officer, Corey
is the key facilitator for the College's core mission.
"It's my job to ensure that basic backbone resources and services are
provided to students and those who are providing the services," he said. "I'm
the behind the scenes guy, collecting and becoming the central repository
for ideas, notions and plans the College has regarding facilities, new programs,
etcetera. My role is a facilitator/coordinator of segments of the College
with latitude to cross boundaries."
Corey earned his Masters of Business Administration from Cumberland University
in 1998 and worked as vice president of Administration at Cumberland. He
was a member of the President's Cabinet with overall responsibility for the
strategic planning, management, operation and oversight of a variety of areas
within the institution.
"I've faced similar questions at other institutions that Prescott College
is now facing. These are questions about adequate resources, enrollment-driven
operations and how we want to educate the community and ourselves. I have
an awareness of the issues, problems, challenges and opportunities associated
with these areas," he said.
"We were looking for someone who had a strong background in financial
and budgeting areas, who understood who we are and who could provide administrative
leadership to various departments within the College," said Human Resources
Director Connie Etzkin, who headed the search committee. "Steven possessed
all of the qualifications that were required, and came from a small liberal
arts college with similar challenges."
Though he is still learning about the College and community, Corey does
know his focus will center on several key issues, including finances, the
physical environment and technology.
"Prescott College of the future, after it is defined by its people,
will be more defined by technological capacity to serve than by our physical
attributes," he said.
"I am very excited to be here. Prescott College is in good shape. It's
an organization that, if it stays focused and committed to wanting to change,
grow and improve, will do great. We're going to have some fun in the next
five to 10 years."
