Greetings, and Happy Thanksgiving
to you all from Prescott College!
I am happy to be writing
to you in this, the first electronic Parents' Newsletter.
I would also like to introduce you to the Parents' website, www.prescott.edu/parents,
that features links to faculty
and administration at PC,
helpful information for sending packages
and mail to your child, information about life
after graduation, and a quick list of helpful
phone numbers.
I'm also excited to announce
the introduction of online
electronic
bulletin boards for parents, where you are able to post questions
or comments and talk with other parents. All you will need
to do is visit
the site, register, and post your message. I hope that
this is helpful for you all. Please let
me know what you think once you try it!
Congratulations to those
parents with children graduating this December! Best wishes to you
all, and here's to a wonderful holiday season.
Best
to you,
Rachel Yoder

Thanks to all of you who
attended Parents' Weekend this past October. It was a wildly
successful--and just plain old fun--weekend, and I'm glad
that we were able to host you here on campus. You can now
view photos of the weekend
online.
Next year's Parents' Weekend
will be held October 21-23. Mark your calendars!
**DATE CHANGE**
Graduation will be held
on Saturday, December 11th. The 2004 Annual Fund Calendar
incorrectly notes graduation as Sunday, December 12th. We apologize
for this mistake; the date of graduation changed after we printed
the calendar.

January
1st 2005 is quickly approaching and that means it'll be time for
students to complete the 2005-2006 Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA).
Even if you do not have
your 2004 federal income tax return completed, you can still
begin your 05-06 FAFSA and then submit your tax return information
at a later date. Many federal and institutional grants have limited
funds, so for the best possible financial aid package, it's best
to complete your FAFSA as early as possible.
For those students graduating
in December (Congratulations!) please be sure that the Financial
Aid Office has a correct mailing address. In the spring
we will be sending new graduates important information on student
loan management and consolidation. With student loan interest
rates at an all-time historical low, consolidating your loans
after your six-month grace period is excellent
financial planning.
Be sure to regularly
check the Prescott College Financial Aid Scholarship
page for current information and Internet links to a variety
of scholarship websites. We also provide an online
list of over two-dozen websites for scholarship searches.
The Prescott College Financial Aid
Staff is always available for all students and parents who have
questions or need help with any financial aid matter. Our goal
is to assist students in achieving their educational dreams. Be st
of luck!

Many of you returned
questions in your surveys that we sent to you earlier this year.
In each newsletter, we'll answer one or two of your questions. In
our first newsletter, we're answering the question most often asked
by parents...
What career
services does Prescott College provide for graduating students?
There are many options
for career services that the Student Services Office provides free
of charge to all Prescott College students and alumni. Presently
career services are provided by Chris Hout, who also provides personal
counseling to current students. He is a 1992 graduate of PC, has
a Master’s of Education in Counseling, and is a licensed Counselor.
Chris generally works
with students 3 to 5 sessions in a systematized way. First, students
participate in a short assessment session to clarify what career
issues to address immediately. Students are then encouraged to participate
in a weekly résumé construction workshop (located
in the Ironwood/Student Union building on Wednesdays from 2-3:00
pm). In that workshop students learn the essentials of networking
and marketing their written materials (résumé/cover
letter/packet) in a consistent and effective way. Individual
follow-up appointments are indicated to fine tune job search materials
as students research appropriate job opportunities in printed and
electronic forms. The use of a schedule is strongly encouraged in
conjunction with job searching strategies. Interview question preparation
is achieved through the use of a video camera in a mock job interview
practice sessions. Students are invited to then use Chris’s
services as needed in evaluating job options and offers.
Plans are underway to
expand Career Services by incorporating counselor in-training into
the office as well as to conduct more outreach, workshops and career
fairs. Encourage your son or daughter to get an early start on finding
a summer job or planning the important first year after graduation
by scheduling an appointment to utilize Prescott College Career
Services. Chris has a handle on helping Prescott College students
and alumni to market their talents and passions without losing their
uniqueness and individuality.

It
takes more than pocket change to create social change...
In
December, you'll be receiving a letter asking for your support of
this year's Change for Good
Annual Fund Campaign from fellow PC parents Peter
and Margie Stern.
I hope you take a moment
to review the letter and pamphlet on the Annual Fund, and to read
about the five students featured
in this year's campaign. Your charitable support benefits
our students and campus greatly!
If you would like to make
a gift to the Annual Fund, you may do so online,
or by using the remittance envelope that will be included with your
letter in December.
What is the Annual
Fund?
The
Annual Fund is composed of the donations given on a yearly basis
from parents, alumni and other friends. These donations augment
"general operating funds," and supports everything from
scholarships and upgrades in technology, to library resources and
our first-rate faculty.
Students
intending to graduate in December, 2006 will need to have their
degree plan on file by March 24, 2005. The next graduation
date after that is May, 2007 with a degree plan deadline in November,
2005. Students intending to graduate before December, 2006
have missed the deadline and should see the Academic Advisor,
Robert Johnson, as soon as possible: rjohnson@prescott.edu
or 1-877-350-2100 ext 1013.
To find out more information
about federal standards in student privacy, you can visit the FERPA
(Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) website. This site is
particularly useful to parents of college students through the links
"for Eligible Students" and "Model Notification for
Postsecondary Officials." http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/index.html
If you have more questions
about this or any other registrar related topic, please contact
the Registrar, Mary Trevor, at 1-877-350-2100 ext 1101
or e-mail mtrevor@prescott.edu.
