Adult Degree Program

Mentor Information

Mentors are extremely important to the success of our Program! ADP students work with mentors in their communities to complete their individual courses. Students work on completing their Bachelor of Arts degree and/or Teacher Certification, usually while holding down a full-time job and other commitments. They are typically older than the average college student and are often already employed in their area of study. The Adult Degree Program model allows students to complete their degree and/or certification without leaving their communities. Students accomplish this by working with a core faculty member from the College and completing their individual courses with a mentor.

How to Become a Mentor

Prescott College thanks you for taking the time to learn about our mentoring process. This section will guide you through mentoring and includes all of the information you will need to be a mentor — with the exception of your previously acquired field expertise. Please take the time to read it thoroughly, so you are well prepared to mentor, and fully understand the expectations of both your student and Prescott College. Additional forms and documents for mentors are available here.

If you do not have a student and would like one to work with, please recognize that most of our mentors come to us through our students, from their local communities. We appreciate your interest in the mentor program and encourage you to complete your file, but cannot ensure that you will be matched with a student. In either case, Prescott College commends you for the service you are bringing to our students, this institution, and your community. Without such dedicated professionals, our program would not work. Thank you for your contribution!

The Mission of Prescott College
It is the mission of Prescott College to educate students of diverse ages and backgrounds to understand, thrive in, and enhance our world community and the environment. We regard learning as a continuing process and strive to provide an education that will enable students to live productive lives of self-fulfillment and service to others. Students are encouraged to think critically and act ethically with sensitivity to both the human community and the biosphere. Our philosophy stresses experiential learning and self-direction within an interdisciplinary curriculum.

The Role of the Mentor
As a mentor, your role is not to design and lecture a course, but instead to work with the student to co-create the learning experience, as well as the critical presentation and evaluation of it. You serve as an expert in your field, guiding the student through the theoretical knowledge of the course subject and challenging the student to apply this knowledge through course activities. At Prescott College, we believe that students learn by combining direct field experiences with active, intellectual work. The learning plan for each course takes shape through the study contract. This is the most important component of the mentor process, for it ensures our academic goals are being met.

Credentials Required
Mentors for the College's ADP must have a graduate-level degree and, preferably, teaching experience in the relevant content area. Exceptions are made if the instructor has the equivalent of sufficient graduate-level learning in life experience and appropriate teaching experience. Students' relatives and close friends are not eligible to mentor their courses because of potential conflict of interest. Disregarding this policy will result in the student not receiving credit for the course and the mentor not receiving payment.

Prescott College requires that each mentor file contains the following documents:

  • current résumé
  • copy of college transcript (may be unofficial) showing award of highest degree earned, or copy of the highest degree earned
  • Credential datasheet
  • W-9 form

These credentials should be submitted by the time the contract is turned in. Payment will not be issued if any of the above items are missing. Occasionally, we may ask mentors to update their files with current written letters of recommendation or transcripts.

A complete mentor credentials file will assure that the student receives credit for the course, and that the mentor receives payment and permit timely evaluation of the student's satisfactory progress and continuing financial aid.

All mentor credentials should be sent to the attention of Jody Lichtenberg in the Prescott Office or to Stacy Smith in the Tucson Office. Please include a cover letter, listing the academic areas and course titles you wish to teach.

Mentor Payments
Payment for mentors is issued according to the end of course date that is listed upon the study contract form and upon receipt of the evaluation form. Delays in the contract process occur if the contract is not approved or if the mentor's complete credentials are not on file in the ADP office. Such delays affect the student's registration for the particular course and will postpone the submission of a check request to the Business Office for mentor payment. ADP must have a complete file for each mentor before payment can be issued. Checks will not be released to mentors until all required credentials have been received.
