MAP General News

Note: Announcements and documentation of changes to the MAP have been moved. Please go this page on Changes in the MAP Policies Manual.

New Study Plan Cover Page--Posted August 11, 2008

We have revised the study plan cover page so that there is only one that can be used for all study plans--for graduate study as a whole and for individual semesters. The thesis plan still has its own cover page.

Please note that the new cover page has a a place to write your course titles and credits. This is an important new procedural step needed in the Prescott College Office of the Registrar. Please use this new form.

2008 Improved MAP Handbook is Now Available

The MAP Handbook is now directly available here on the MAP Current Students web-page. All students and advisors are asked to use the current procedures in this online handbook as they supercede all prior written procedures.

Verification of Academic Attendance and Participation--Posted October 24, 2007

In order for each student to remain enrolled, and prior to any financial aid disbursement, the core faculty for each student must now verify that the student is in attendance and participating (or actively engaged) in the semester. This will happen twice each semester: at the beginning of the term and about 50% into the term. This verification will take place for all students in MAP regardless of financial aid status.

The first faculty verification of attendance and participation takes place within the first two weeks of each semester. Students and advisors do not need to do anything for this verification; rather the verification is made by the student’s core faculty based on colloquium attendance or other initial contact between the student and core faculty, as well as receipt of the advisor-approved study plan (due Monday, one week after the end of the first colloquium of each semester). Consequences: If this first verification is not made, the first financial aid disbursement of the semester will not be released to the student and the student may be withdrawn from the semester by the office of the registrar. Note: The important cultural change here is that an advisor-approved study plan arriving later than one week after the first colloquium may now result in the loss of financial aid and withdrawal from the semester. In addition, as of the 2007-2008 academic year there will be a non-refundable registration fee that will be lost in the event a student is dropped due to non-participation.

Specific Responsibility for Students and Advisors: Nothing has changed; simply ensure that the student-designed and advisor-approved study plan is received in the MAP Office by Monday, one week after the end of the first colloquium of each semester.

The second faculty verification of active participation and engagement takes place about half way into each semester (just before the second colloquium) and comes to the core faculty from the student’s graduate advisor. An email (or letter to those without email) will be sent by the MAP Office to all advisors that includes a statement of verification. The advisor must forward the verification email (or letter) to the student’s core faculty along with a copy of the advisor’s response to the student’s second or third study packet for the semester. Consequences: If this second verification is not made, the student may be responsible for returning a portion of aid received at the beginning of the term, and all enrolled credits will be changed to reflect “no credit.” Note: The important change in the culture of MAP is that if for some reason the advisor-approved study plan (that is due Monday, one week after the colloquium) still has not arrived midway into the term the student will receive no credit for all enrolled credits (and per current refund policies will not be eligible for any refund).

Specific Responsibility for Students and Advisors: Advisors will now forward a verification email/letter to the student’s core faculty by the date requested and attach a copy of your response to the student’s most recent study packet; the verification letter will be sent to you by the MAP Office approximately two weeks before it is due.

As you can see, this new policy is an obvious and necessary standard for any educational institution. The very flexible culture in MAP has created an anomaly where students are sometimes carrying out work that has not been approved by faculty. This will no longer be an option—students’ work as defined in the individual study plan must be approved by both the graduate advisor and core faculty within the first two weeks of each semester (including the time for processing by advising assistants and review by core faculty); further, any student whose work is still not approved midway through the term will receive no credit for all enrolled credits.
