Dr. Laird Christensen brings decades of field experience, teaching, and leadership to Prescott College, where he directs the MS in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. Before joining Prescott, Laird created the first online graduate programs in environmental studies and sustainability at Green Mountain College, pioneering a transdisciplinary, bioregional approach that empowers students to address the unique challenges of their own communities.

A native of western Oregon, Laird spent much of his life working in forests — from timber grading to serving as a ranger and Writer-in-Residence at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. His academic journey took him through the University of Illinois and the University of Oregon, alongside hands-on learning in sustainable living through intentional communities, coalition-building, and nonprofit leadership.

Laird’s writing explores how people connect (and sometimes disconnect) with the places they call home, with work published in outlets like The Utne ReaderNorthern WoodlandsWild EarthThe Northwest Review, and Whole Terrain. He’s also co-edited two major collections: Teaching about Place: Learning from the Land and Teaching North American Environmental Literature.
