What will this program look like?
Asynchronous by design, this online program fits into your schedule. Students take 6 core OL courses ranging from philosophies and methods, program administration, risk management, and DEI, emphasizing ethics, place-based learning, and curriculum development. You will take elective coursework in an area of your choosing, such as environmental education, sustainable business management, adventure therapy, social justice, and activism. Combining your concentration with the foundational curriculum will open perspectives and opportunities in your work as an outdoor educator. In our capstone semester, create an original research project, such as a portfolio of curriculum development, a business plan, development of programs for specific populations, ethnographic research, and more. Thinking a Ph.D. might be in your future? You can always opt to do a thesis.

Evaluate interdisciplinary, social, and behavioral science theories associated with outdoor leadership and education, integrating (1) assessment of the benefits of their practical application for human and more-than-human environments and (2) application of theory in efforts towards positive social and cultural change.
Develop and apply values-based ethics to guide leadership, judgment, risk management, and decision-making that reflect an ethical analysis and interpretation of outdoor education.
Engage stakeholders in developing sustainable solutions to social and environmental challenges common to groups, organizations, communities, and ecosystems.
Analyze and appreciate socio-cultural relationships, intersectionality, and the implications for outdoor education in fostering socially just and equitable experiences.
Understand advanced ecological literacy concepts, reflecting analysis and appreciation of how humans relate to their environment (ecological, spiritual, and cultural) and the relevance of these ideas to outdoor education.
Incorporate interdisciplinary, social, and behavioral sciences theories to apply skills and knowledge to create and implement integrative outdoor education experiences.
- The Outdoor Leadership Program is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. The Higher Learning Commission has approved Prescott College to offer all of its degree titles via distance education.
