Green Mountain Center for Sustainability Notes for July 2023
Submitted by Laird Christensen and Eleanor Tison, Co-Directors
Happy Summer! Now that we’ve wrapped up the traditional academic year, Zach Czuprynski (our incomparable Sustainability Coordinator) has recently completed the 2022-23 Annual Report for the Green Mountain Center for Sustainability at Prescott College. We thought you might be interested in seeing a few highlights from that review:
- More than 115 participants attended sustainability educational workshops and teach-ins offered through the Green Mountain Center this year.
- Nathalie Burgeff (a 2023 graduate and MS student in Resilient and Sustainable Communities) facilitated a “Towards Zero Waste” campaign, leading to a holistic waste assessment of Prescott College and resulting in a Bronze Scope 2 zero-waste certification from Atlas. Nat also received a BEST Fellowship from the USDA and is an Atlas Zero Waste Fellow.
- Our students collected 2,800 lbs of food scraps from residence halls and the Crossroads Cafe, which were then converted to compost.
- We created the Green Mountain Center Advisory Council to strategize outreach with Green Mountain College alumni and foster connections with Prescott College. We are working on ways to create opportunities for connection and networking among alumni and students, and have established a dedicated Green Mountain Center fund, intended to help us meet the goals listed on the Green Mountain Center website.
- Led by Zach Czuprynski, Prescott College worked with other stakeholders to produce local climate impact and adaptation/mitigation reports for Prescott and the surrounding Quad Cities.
- In addition to leading daily events in the Sustainability Center, our work-study students collaborated with Slow Food Prescott this Spring to host Seed Mania 2023, drawing over 400 people to campus for a day of community education and local food.
So it’s been a very good year! How about for you? We’re always inspired to hear what our alumni are up to. Please reach out and let us know about where the path from Green Mountain College has led by sending a message to [email protected].
