Hi, I’m SC Wharton and I am a lifelong, neurodivergent learner. I love coming up with integrative solutions and helping others develop their passions. As a mom of two teenagers, I love spending time outdoors and going on hikes with my pup, Hugo. Currently I teach 4th grade . I have a certification in land stewardship and ecological gardening. I am also a board member of the nonprofit RiverStewards and a volunteer land steward for Lancaster Conservancy. Nature is healing and the muse we need to help us come together to thrive. Thrivability is the idea encompassing the positive aspects of our relationship with nature to create a future that surpasses sustaining the current modalities and constructs of living. My research is centered on creating a framework of thrivability for schools and communities focusing on ecopsychology, social emotional learning, trauma informed care, restorative practices, and culturally relevant pedagogy. and the benefits of green spaces. I am excited to explore the synergism of these frameworks.
Q&A
My Masters ended with me focusing on the UN Sustainability goals and STEM education. I knew I wanted to pursue a doctorate and Prescott was the only school with the program that fit my background and passion.
My focus is on the concept and development of thrivability within sustainable education primarily through the synergism of ecopsycology, social emotional learning, trauma informed care, restorative practices, and culturally relevant pedagogy.
The community- I’ve have developed some amazing friendships across the country.
I am not the best with online learning. I have overcome my struggles through relationships I develop in each class to personalize my experience.
I am currently a 4th grade teacher and writer (just self published a children’s book). I hope to continue to work in education and writing with the emphasis on equitable learning and access to green spaces. It would be amazing to teach at the collegiate level and conduct research across the globe to redefine education in a sustainable and thriving way.
I love all creative endeavors, DIY, and problem solving. I am currently trying to rewild my yard with native meadow plants. I am a writer and abstract artist, and working on a children’s book series. I love being outdoors in the woods with my pup Hugo. Reading and drawing are one of my favorite pastimes at home. That or snuggled on couch with my cat Mune watching fantasy, adventure movies. Attending the local art scene is also a great joy.
Make connections in your classes (easier to do with the group discussion assignments) and try connect everything you learn to your focus in your thesis.
