Dr. Smith has served as the superintendent for the Yarnell Elementary School District #52 in Yarnell, Arizona and the Antelope Union High School District in Wellton, AZ. Other leadership roles include serving as principal at the Childhelp USA Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona and as principal and special education director in the Wellton Elementary School District in Wellton, Arizona. He has taught general music, choir, band, reading, special education and even drove the school bus at one time in schools in Ohio, California, and Arizona. Aside from working in the preK-12 area, he has taught as an adjunct faculty for Arizona Western College, Ottawa University (Arizona campus), Northern Arizona University, and the University of Phoenix. Dr. Smith earned the Doctor of Management degree (D.M.) from the University of Phoenix and his dissertation focused on the influence of organizational culture on student achievement in rural Arizona school districts, a M.Ed. in education leadership and special education from Northern Arizona University, and an Arts Bachelors from West Liberty State College. Additional graduate work has been completed at Duquesne University, Youngstown State, Arizona State, and Harvard Graduate School of Education (Principal’s Center). Dr. Smith was awarded the All-Arizona Superintendent Award from the Arizona School Board Association/Arizona School Administrators, the ASA Higher Education Division Administrator of the Year, and Yarnell Elementary School District earned an “A” rating from the Arizona Department of Education in 2010. Finally, Dr. Smith has presented at the national conference for the Northwest Evaluation Association in Portland, OR, The Arizona Rural School Association, the Arizona School Administrators, The Utah Rural Schools Association, the American Council on Rural Special Education, and the Arizona TESOL (Teachers of English to Students of Other Languages) conference. His book Down on Hill Street Beech Bottom, WV, chronicled the history of his family growing up in Beech Bottom, WV was published in 2009.
